Siberian Chiffchaff  Castle Cove, Dorset, February 27th 2009

 

This individual stuck out like a sore thumb amongst the green-and-yellow Chiffchaffs at the same spot. We did wonder if it was perhaps a little too cold-toned and a little too green on the wing coverts, flight feathers and tail but, well, what do we know. On the plus side it did show a strong, albeit quite brief, response to a recording of Siberian Chiffchaff song: it immediately flew into the nearest bush to the tape-player and proceeded to do a short, silent, wing-quivering twirl amongst the twigs (none of the other Chiffchaffs present seemed to show the slightest interest in the recording).
